Today,
Stonehenge is caught in the stranglehold of roads
and traffic. Cars, lorries and buses thunder past
on the busy A303 trunk road, and the A344 almost
clips the monument's Heel Stone.
The car park and visitor facilities are positioned
right next to the monument, are woefully inadequate.
Visitors have to approach Stonehenge via a concrete
tunnel under the road.
The World Heritage Site is criss-crossed by fences,
restricting public access.
In 1993, Stonehenge's setting and presentation
was condemned by the UK Parliament's House of
Commons Public Accounts Committee as 'a national
disgrace'.
